Hollywood Posters, A Colfax Avenue Fixture, Is Closing After 35 Years - The Denver Post

A poster promoting "The Big Sleep" rests against a wall as John Caruso, owner of Hollywood Posters works at his shop in Denver on Thursday. (Special see page to The Denver Post) Three bookstores and a record store formerly dotted a single block of East Colfax between Grant and Logan streets, just east of the Capitol building, Caruso said. "The record store guy used to play 'Smoke on the Water' all day on his bass guitar and it would drive me crazy, but it was a great block. It was very different," he said. That's clear from looking at the block, which has seen other longtime businesses, including united states Wolfe's Barbeque, Jerry's Record Exchange and Taki's Japanese restaurant, close in the past five years. "We've got more browsers than buyers these days," said (visit) Caruso, 70, a former co-owner of the popular Jerry's Used Books at Colfax and Lincoln. He said he pays about $1,500 per month right now and would have to pay about double that to keep the space.
